Mainly what causes my anxiety, is constant overthinking. A lot of the time it is overthinking mixed in with an overactive guilt complex. One thing I try to do, is take a minute or two when I can to try and get “out of my head” to break the cycle of overthinking. This includes exercise, mindfulness, breathing exercises. What I would like for my family and friends to know is that sometimes I just would appreciate emotional support, even if they can’t relate to the situation. A lot of misconceptions include: people with mental health issues aren’t active enough, people with mental health aren’t as hardworking (depression can come across as lazy), and people with mental health struggles are just “too sensitive” or “too emotional”.

What I would like to share about my experience with Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder is that you can get better. You can and will feel better, regardless of what people who are inexperienced with handling it will say. There are real people out there who are willing to help and support. It’s important to surround yourself with people who not only care about your mental health but also those who bring out healthy coping mechanisms.
