Sometimes I think back to a time when I didn’t have anxiety. It seems so long ago. I try to remember exactly when my anxiety started, but I can’t. It snuck up on me and hasn’t left me alone since.

My anxiety has only become worse over time, manifesting itself in more physical ways from chronic hives to violently throwing up. The way I manage my anxiety is by trying to control as many things in my life as I can.

Most of the time, my coping mechanism is interpreted as trying to micromanage those around me. Dealing with mental illness is a constant learning process. It’s not only a learning process for the person suffering from the mental illness, but also for friends and family members.

The best thing you can do is keep open communication with the people in your life. Let them know your struggles and what they can do to help. We have to keep the mental health conversation going.
