The Weighted Blanket Project
Anxiety sneaks into my life when I have to make quick decisions, during speaking engagements, and when I feel claustrophobic like at large public gatherings like concerts. I can quickly feel my chest tighten, and my breathing becomes shallow. The best way I've found to help calm myself is to find a quiet area (typically the bathroom) and breathe deeply. I often need just a few minutes to give myself a pep talk and get back to the event or task at hand. I try to combat some of my public speaking anxiety by being very prepared beforehand.
The best way to support those who suffer from anxiety is by being empathetic, giving them support and space. It can be a struggle to find a balance between hovering and being too distant when you're trying to help those who suffer from anxiety. It's important to note that people respond differently, but they will appreciate your efforts, and you'll soon figure out the best way to support them. Many misconceptions around mental illness stem from the stigma that an individual is inferior. I hope that the upheaval of stigmas around mental illnesses will encourage more people to seek professional help.
