I have battled depression most of my life. Although I didn't realize the issues I had were related to depression until I went to my first counseling appointment and learned the signs and symptoms of depression. With a doctor's help, I got medication and am in a better place.

I think the hardest part is there are so many people out there who think saying "snap out of it" actually works, when it doesn't. Those types of comments along with the stigma of seeing a counselor didn't help for a long time. I am now not ashamed to reveal I see a counselor to someone who I see might be battling depression as well.

However, I don't go around advertising it either. Most people I share this with are friends and family and they're very supportive. I don't like having to rely on medication to "feel better". However, if it keeps me from hiding into a dark cave alone, I'll take it with a smile.
